Poems from Ashas Ree

Shaw Brandes

A Note from the Writer

This entire project is fan fiction / fan poetry inspired by Star Wars, especially the animated series Star Wars Resistance, and most especially an episode titled “The Relic Raiders” (season 2, episode 7). It introduced me to the planet of Ashas Ree, and the outpost and temples that feature in my poems (which are meant to be written more than 30 years before the episode takes place, mostly in 2-3 ABY). I definitely recommend watching it if you want a better sense of the world and its butterfly-like Parvinoths. The location reminded me of the Archaeological Site of Xel-Há in the Riviera Maya of Mexico, a gorgeous and quiet spot with Mayan ruins surrounded by trees (pictured below).

Did you know that Star Wars Resistance has the franchise’s first openly gay couple to be seen onscreen, Flix and Orka? And that Christopher Sean, voice of Kazuda Xiono, is the first Asian American actor to play a leading role in Star Wars? I think that Star Wars Resistance is highly underrated, so I borrowed other elements from the series to show it some extra love. The droid model I use for D-14L was introduced in Star Wars Resistance, as was the Voorpak and Kowakian Ape-Lizard. And my poem The Dream is based on the Star Wars Resistance character Eila.

I’ve been having a lot of fun with this, and plan to continue creating new Star Wars poetry that reveals more about the characters and world. Poems from Ashas Ree will never get published and might never be performed on stage. It’s one of those rare projects that has no real end goal. I just really love Star Wars and wanted to work on this for myself. But I’m also very happy to share it with anyone who might be interested!
